Amazon Appstore for Android to Shut Down in August
Amazon's app store for Android will be discontinued, along with the Amazon Coins program, by August 2025.

Amazon Appstore—the company’s third-party app store for Android smartphones—will be discontinued later this year, marking the end of its 14-year journey. The e-commerce giant has also announced the discontinuation of its digital currency program, Amazon Coins, that was used to purchase apps. While the app store won’t be available for download on Android devices anymore, it will continue to function on Amazon's own devices like the Fire Tablet and Fire TV.
Shutdown Timeline and Details
A new FAQ page on the company’s website states clearly that access to the Amazon Appstore on Android devices will be shut down on August 20, 2025. After this date, Amazon will not guarantee that any apps downloaded from the Appstore will continue to operate on Android smartphones. This effectively means that users will not be able to download or install the Amazon Appstore on any Android smartphone or tablet post this date.
Users with existing subscriptions—especially those with auto-renewals—are advised to disable them. This can be done by visiting the account section on Amazon’s website and navigating to Digital content and devices > Your Apps > Manage > Your Subscriptions.
Continued Support for Amazon Devices
It is important to note that while the Amazon Appstore is ending support for Android devices, it will continue to operate on Amazon’s Fire OS-based devices. These include the Amazon Fire tablets, Fire TV streaming devices, and other compatible devices that have support for the Amazon Appstore. Therefore, loyal users who own such devices need not worry about access being cut off anytime soon.
End of Amazon Coins
The company will also cease the Amazon Coins program on the same day. Currently, these coins cannot be purchased anymore. Users are encouraged to utilize their Amazon Coins by August 20, as any remaining coins will be refunded after this cutoff date.
Possible Reasons for Discontinuation
While Amazon has not explicitly stated why it is discontinuing support for Android devices, it’s worth considering that the recent Android 15 updates add further restrictions on sideloaded applications. Moreover, Google introduced new APIs that permit developers to enforce app downloads specifically via the Play Store, thereby further limiting the use of alternative app stores.
