Hyderabad: At least eight workers are feared trapped after a portion of an under-construction tunnel collapsed in Telangana on Saturday. The incident took place behind the Srisailam dam when workers entered to repair a leak. Although many workers managed to escape, eight remain trapped, prompting a rescue operation to ensure their safety.

The collapse affected a span of over 10 meters, and mud has spread over an area of 200 meters, as per reports from a senior official. This tunnel is part of the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) in Nagarkurnool district, specifically located in Amrabad.

Details of the Incident

An official statement confirmed, "A portion of the SLBC tunnel behind the Srisailam dam near Domalapenta experienced a collapse on Saturday. Particularly at the 14th km mark, the roof of the left-side tunnel collapsed for three meters while employees were working on-site." Notably, this section of the tunnel was reopened just four days prior to the accident.

Collector B Santosh reported failed attempts to establish contact with the trapped workers due to a collapse of the internal communication system as well as the air chamber and conveyor belt.

Responses and Rescue Operations

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy expressed his shock over the incident via an online post. He acknowledged reports of injuries but did not provide specific details. "Upon receiving news of the collapse and resultant injuries, the Chief Minister promptly instructed the District Collector, SP, Fire Department, Hydra, and Irrigation Department officials to address the situation and coordinate relief efforts," the statement read.

Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar and other departmental officials have departed for the site using a special helicopter to assess the situation firsthand.

Union Coal Minister G Kishan Reddy also sought clarity on the factors leading to the accident. In an official post on X, he stressed the need for immediate rescue efforts and medical attention for the injured workers.
